Arkansas livestock auction summary

The weekly summary of livestock sales in Arkansas for the week ending Sept. 11, showed estimated receipts of 8,590 head, compared to 3,156 head last week and 15,233 head last year, according to the Arkansas Extension Service-USDA Market News, Little Rock, Ark.

Compared to last week, slaughter cows sold steady to $2 higher. Slaughter bulls sold steady to $1.50 higher. Feeders sold somewhat unevenly again this week, steers mostly steady to $3 lower, heifers near steady. Receipts rebounded after last weeks major rainfall and flooding from hurricane Gustav. We are in for round two as hurricane Ike is to hit Houston and circle up to hit Arkansas. Strong winds, heavy rains and localized flooding are expected. The supply included 5,090 stocker and feeder calves, 2,195 feeder yearlings, 315 replacement cows, 875 slaughter cows and 115 slaughter bulls. The feeder supply was 40% yearling heifers.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1000 to 1500 lbs., 51.00 to 57.00; high dressing, 57.00 to 63.50. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 950 to 1400 lbs., 51.00 to 57.00; high dressing, 57.00 to 64.00; low dressing, 45.00 to 51.00. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 900 to 1300 lbs., 45.00 to 51.00; high dressing, 51.00 to 58.00; low dressing, 37.00 to 45.00. Light, 85 to 92% lean, 700 to 950 lbs., 35.00 to 43.00; low dressing, 28.00 to 35.00.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 1000 to 2100 lbs., 64.00 to 71.50; high dressing, 71.50 to 79.00; low dressing, 59.00 to 64.00.
