2008 grain production forecast moves lower

Nebraska

Based on Sept. 1 conditions, Nebraska's corn crop is forecast at 1.37 billion bushels, 4 percent below last month and 7 percent below last year, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. Yield is forecast at 157 bushels per acre, 6 bushels below last month and 3 bushels below a year ago. Area to be harvested for grain remained at 8.75 million acres, down 5 percent from a year ago. Limited precipitation during August impacted dryland yield potential.

Soybean production in Nebraska is forecast at 226 million bushels, down 4 percent from last month but 18 percent above last year. Acres for harvest, at 4.7 million, are unchanged from last month but up 25 percent from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 48 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels per acre from August and 2.5 bushels below 2007.

Sorghum production in Nebraska is forecast at 21.4 million bushels, down 2 percent from the August forecast and down 9 percent from last year. Acres for harvest, at 240,000, are unchanged from last month and 2007. Yield forecast, at 89 bushels per acre, is down 2 bushels from the previous month and 9 bushels below last year.

Sugar beet production of 870,000 tons is up 9 percent from last month but down 16 percent from 2007. Yield, at 23.5 tons per acre, is up 2.0 tons from last month and equal to a year ago.
