Oat, barley harvests nearing completion

Oat and barley harvests reached or passed 95 percent complete during the week ending Sept. 7, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Minnesota Field Office, Sept. 9.

Spring wheat, at 87 percent complete, was just shy of the 5-year average of 88 percent complete on Sept. 7. The majority of the corn crop was in the dent stage of development and over forty percent of soybeans were turning yellow or dropping leaves by the end of last week.

The average temperature for the week was 61.0 degrees, 1.4 degrees below normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of Sept. 5 were 12 percent very short, 35 percent short, 51 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Statewide, on average, there were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork during the week.

As of Sept. 7, 94 percent of corn had reached the dough stage compared to 100 percent last year and 95 percent average. Sixty-one percent of corn was in the dent stage compared to 94 percent last year and 76 percent average. Corn was 2 percent mature, compared to 26 percent last year, and 13 percent average. Soybeans were 41 percent turning yellow compared to 75 percent last year and 62 percent average.

Barley was 95 percent harvested compared to 100 percent last year and 93 percent average. Oats were 96 percent harvested compared to 100 percent last year and 98 percent average.

As of Sept. 5, 63 percent of corn and 64 percent of soybeans were rated in good or excellent condition. Seventy percent of dry beans, 83 percent of sunflowers, 72 percent of sugarbeets, and 36 percent of pasture were rated in good or excellent condition.
