Kelln named national proficiency finalistOklahoma The National FFA Organization recently announced that Fairview FFA President Kela Kelln was selected as a finalist for the National FFA Proficiency Award in the area of Agricultural Communications-Entrepreneurship/Placement. Kelln is one of four students chosen from across the national to compete for this award at the National FFA Convention this fall. Proficiency awards recognize outstanding student achievements in agribusiness gained through establishment of a new business, working for an existing company or otherwise gaining hands-on career experience. This past year, 47 proficiency areas were available (this year, the number will change to 49), ranging from aquaculture to grain production. A student selects a proficiency area based on his or her Supervised Agriculture Experience project or based on an area of agriculture they are involved in or find interesting. Competing for these awards allows students to develop valuable experience and leadership skills at the local, state and national level. Proficiency awards are divided into entrepreneurship and placement, depending on the award area and the SAE. Kelln, a senior, became eligible for the national award after winning the Oklahoma state FFA competition earlier this year. Brystal Karber and Justin Bedwell, also of the Fairview FFA Chapter, placed first in the state as well with their proficiency awards of Equine Science and Floriculture, respectively. They both received silver recognition at the national level. Kelln's award area is sponsored by McCormick Agency as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. In recognition of being a national finalist, each of the four finalists will receive a plaque and $500. The national winner will receive an additional $500 during a special ceremony at the national convention. Kelln is one of twenty-one national finalists from Oklahoma that will be recognized at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, Oct. 22 to 25. "Competing at this level is a great opportunity and I am honored to be selected as a national finalist," said Kelln. In addition to being selected as a national finalist, Kelln is a Oklahoma state Prepared Speaking winner and was a part of the state winning Opening Ceremonies team. She shows goats and is an extremely active member of the Fairview chapter. After high school, Kelln plans on attending Oklahoma State University majoring in Agricultural Communications. The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 500,823 student members- all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture--as a part of 7,358 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
