Farmers see busy weekNew Mexico Farmers were busy irrigating cotton, corn and preparing for another alfalfa cutting during the week ending Sept. 7, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, Sept. 8. There were 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture was 11 percent very short, 28 percent short, 57 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Wind damage was 16 percent light and 5 percent moderate. Alfalfa was mostly good with the fourth cutting 89 percent complete and the fifth cutting 35 percent complete. Cotton was mostly good with 19 percent of bolls open. Corn was mostly good with 88 percent in the dough stage and 48 percent dent. Irrigated sorghum was mostly good with 30 percent coloring and 3 percent mature. Dry sorghum was mostly poor to fair with 72 percent headed and 50 percent coloring. Irrigated winter wheat was mostly good with 40 percent planted. Dry winter wheat was mostly fair to poor with 50 percent planted. Chiles were mostly good with 73 percent of the green harvest complete. Peanuts were mostly fair. Pecans were mostly good. Ranchers were harvesting and baling alfalfa and other hays. Cattle were mostly fair. Sheep were mostly fair. Range and pastures were mostly good to fair. 9/15/08 Date: 9/11/08
