Breanne Svehla named director of policy internship programs

Texas

A former Peace Corps volunteer has been named director of a Texas A&M University internship program that focuses on agriculture and natural resource management.

In her new position at Texas A&M, Breanne Svehla will head the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' Agricultural and Natural Resources Policy Internship Program as well as the Office of Undergraduate Programs and Academic Services' Public Policy Internship Program.

Svehla is an alumna of both programs. In 2002, she was Agricultural and Natural Resources intern in Washington, D.C., for U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-TX. As a public policy intern in 2003, she conducted research for the International Programs Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Cooperative State Research Education and Extension Service.

Both internships led to her employment as a program assistant with the USDA, where she worked on international development projects in Armenia and the Republic of Georgia.

"These two programs played an integral role in my personal and professional development," Svehla said. "They were the catalyst for my career and opened my eyes to the world on so many levels. I am truly honored to be involved with the continuation of these programs and am very excited about working with students that represent A&M so well."

She recently returned to the U.S. after serving three years as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Republic of Moldova. She also worked as an agricultural consultant with the National Farmers' Federation of Moldova for one year, and later became a youth development specialist and project manager an international youth development organization in Moldova.

Svehla helped Moldovan university students to implement entrepreneurship, education and leadership projects.

Svehla earned a bachelor of science degree in agricultural development from Texas A&M in 2003. She also interned in Australia for the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries through the L.T. Jordan Institute's Internship and Living Abroad Program.
