Arkansas livestock sales summary

The weekly summary of livestock sales in Arkansas for the week ending Sept. 4, showed estimated receipts of 3,165 head, compared to 7,253 head last week and 8,503 head last year, according to the Arkansas Extension Service-USDA Market News, Little Rock, Ark.

Compared to last week, slaughter cows sold steady to $1 lower. Slaughter bulls sold steady to $2 lower. Feeders sold somewhat unevenly this week, mostly steady to $2 lower. Hurricane Gustav blasted through Louisiana and found a home in Arkansas this week. Rain fall totals are still incomplete but several areas of the state received more than 10 inches. Major flooding has occurred and power outages have left over 100,000 in the dark. The storm caused some markets to close and hampered livestock movement curtailing receipts at others. The supply consisted of 2,060 stocker and feeder calves, 535 feeder yearlings, 190 replacement cows, 330 slaughter cows, and 50 slaughter bulls. The feeder supply was 39% yearling heifers.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1000 to 1500 lbs., 52.00 to 58.00; high dressing, 58.00 to 59.00. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 950 to 1400 lbs., 49.00 to 55.00; high dressing, 55.00 to 61.50; low dressing, 45.00 to 49.00. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 900 to 1300 lbs., 44.00 to 50.00; high dressing, 50.00 to 58.00; low dressing, 37.00 to 44.00. Light, 85 to 92% lean, 700 to 950 lbs., 34.00 to 42.00.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 1000 to 2100 lbs., 62.50 to 70.00; high dressing, 70.50 to 78.50; low dressing, 59.00 to 62.50.

Feeder steers: Medium and large frame 1, 300 to 345 lbs., 117.00 to 126.00 (122.69); 350 to 390 lbs., 117.00 to 127.00 (120.82); 400 to 445 lbs., 109.00 to 131.00 (117.41); 450 to 495 lbs., (474) 105.00 to 120.00 (114.18); 500 to 545 lbs., 102.00 to 115.00 (110.28); 550 to 595 lbs., 103.00 to 113.00 (107.32); 600 to 645 lbs., 100.00 to 107.50 (105.35); 650 to 690 lbs., 100.00 to 107.25 (104.45). Pairs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 3 to 7 years old, 800 to 1200 lbs., with 100- to 200-lb. calves, 800.00 to 900.00 per pair; 200- to 300-lb. calves, 1000.00 to 1100.00 per pair, few to 1125.00. Small and medium frame 1 to 2, 5 to 10 years old, 750 to 950 lbs., with 100- to 200-lb. calves, 600.00 to 700.00 per pair.
