2009 Master Gardeners training program deadline Oct. 31Colorado Colorado State University Extension, Weld County Office is currently recruiting applicants for the 2009 Master Gardeners Training Program. An Oct. 31 application deadline is in affect for this program as we are only taking 20 applicants. Seven training sessions begin Jan. 28 and continue until March 11 with Student Option Classes (must choose four half days) beginning on March 10th and running until April 1. These option classes will give the students flexibility to choose core areas for a more specific training experience. Colorado Master Gardeners are volunteers and are part of the outreach program of Colorado State University Extension and as apprentice Master Gardeners are required to volunteer a total of 50 hours in exchange for training. After your first year's service as a returning Master Gardener you are required to volunteer a total of 24 hours and have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of additional continuing education. Program fees of $185 for the Master Gardener Certificate or $485 for the Colorado Gardeners Certificate are assessed for this program and cover materials, and speaker's fees. The participants taking classes for the Colorado Garden Certificate are not required to volunteer any time to the program. The Weld County Extension Office can either e-mail an application or mail the application to participants. Class size is limited to 20 participants and these participants will be interviewed before allowing them into the program. If you are interested in attending this year's training call Colorado State University Extension-Weld County office at 970-304-6535. Potential Master Gardeners are asked to apply to the program by filling out an application. Although this is a volunteer position, you must submit an application and you will be asked to sign a contract that you will perform a minimum of 50 volunteer hours in exchange for training. The Master Gardener curriculum includes more than 60 hours of classroom instruction over a ten-week period from January through April 2009. Training in Weld County is held in conjunction with Larimer County. The classes include a full day of lecture and practice sessions on topics, such as plant diseases and diagnosis, plant biology, insects, turf and turf care, soils, trees and shrubs. Experts from other county Extension offices or CSU professors instruct the classes. Classes are intense but interesting and you learn from not only your instructor, but also from your classmates. And there is no (or very little) homework.
