USDA releases cattle on feed numbersSouth Dakota: South Dakota's 1,000 plus capacity feedlots reported 170,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market on Aug. 1, according to the South Dakota office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is down 5,000 head from a year earlier and down 15,000 head from a month earlier. Placements during July totaled 21,000 head, down 1,000 head from last year but unchanged from June 2008. Marketings of fed cattle during July totaled 35,000 head, down 7,000 head from last year and down 3,000 head from June 2008. Other disappearance during July totaled 1,000 head, down 1,000 head from last year and down 2,000 head from June 2008. Iowa: There were 683,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market in all feedlots in Iowa on Aug. 1, down 6 percent from July 1, and down 12 percent from Aug. 1, 2007. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head had 475,000 head on feed, down 5 percent from both last month and last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head had 208,000 head on feed, down 8 percent from last month and down 24 percent from last year. Placements during July totaled 69,000 head, up 41 percent from last month but down 21 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head placed 51,000 head, up 24 percent from last month but down 20 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head placed 18,000 head. This is up 125 percent from last month but down 22 percent from last year. Marketings for July were 108,000 head, up 14 percent from last month but down 4 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head marketed 75,000 head, up 25 percent from last month and 3 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head marketed 33,000 head, down 6 percent from last month and down 18 percent from last year. Other disappearance totaled 3,000 head. Kansas: The number of cattle on feed on Aug. 1 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.01 million head, down 4 percent from a year ago and down 3 percent from July 1. Placements during July totaled 440,000 head, up 2 percent from a year ago and 33 percent above June 2008 placements of 330,000 head. Marketings during July totaled 500,000 head, 11 percent above July 2007 and 16 percent above June 2008. Other disappearance was 10,000 head, down 10,000 from a year ago but unchanged from the previous month. The percent of July placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 16 percent; 600-699 pounds, 21 percent; 700-799 pounds, 35 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 28 percent. Oklahoma: The Oklahoma inventory of cattle on feed for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head, was 290,000 head on Aug. 1, down 3 percent from the previous month, and down 5 percent from Aug. 1, 2007. Placements during July were 46,000, down 4 percent from one year ago. Marketings of fed cattle during July were 55,000, down 18 percent from the same month last year. Other disappearance during July totaled 1,000 head. Texas: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.59 million head on Aug. 1, down 7 percent from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was down 3 percent from the July 1 level. Producers placed 460,000 head in commercial feedlots during July, up 18 percent from a year ago, but unchanged from the June 2008 total. Texas commercial feeders marketed 520,000 head during July, up 11 percent from last year and up 8 percent from last month. On July 1, there were 2.19 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 84 percent of the state's total. The number on feed across the area was down 8 percent from last year and down 2 percent from the July total. July placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 409,000 head, up 3 percent from the June total. Marketings were up 8 percent from last month to 450,000 head. Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 9.87 million head on Aug. 1. This inventory was 4 percent below Aug. 1, 2007. Placements in feedlots during July totaled 1.66 million head, 2 percent above July 2007. July placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds totaled 360,000 head; 600-699 pounds totaled 320,000 head; 700-799 pounds totaled 476,000 head; 800 pounds and greater totaled 505,000 head. Marketings of fed cattle during July totaled 2.04 million head, 2 percent above 2007. United States: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.87 million head on Aug. 1. The inventory was 4 percent below Aug. 1, 2007 and 9 percent below Aug. 1, 2006. Placements in feedlots during July totaled 1.66 million, 2 percent above 2007 but 15 percent below 2006. Net placements were 1.62 million head. This is the second lowest placements for the month of July since the series began in 1996. During July, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 360,000, 600-699 pounds were 320,000, 700-799 pounds were 476,000 and 800 pounds and greater were 505,000. Marketings of fed cattle during July totaled 2.04 million, 2 percent above 2007 and 5 percent above 2006.
