Texas A&M captures third consecutive academic quiz bowl title

Texas

The academic quiz bowl team from Texas A&M University's department of agricultural economics recently won its third consecutive national title in Orlando, Fla., at the American Agricultural Economics Association conference.

Texas A&M went undefeated, competing against the University of Nebraska in the final round to bring home the national title. It was Texas A&M's sixth national title since 1990.

Team members are Robert Withers, a senior from Dallas; John Winkelmann, a senior from Brenham; Shauna Yow, a senior from Seguin; Casey Munn, a senior from Paris; Matt Colvin, a senior from Cypress; and James Boer, a senior from Jerome, Idaho.

The team was supported by Kelly Pritchett, a junior from Joshua, who was elected national president of the student section of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, and Matthew Okeson, a junior from Kingwood, who was elected vice-president in charge of the southern region. Shauna Yow also placed second in the student research competition.

Coaches of the team are Jim Mjelde, Eric Manthei and Fred Boadu. The team was sponsored by former student Graham Weston ('86).

"The three-peat title is the outcome of the collective efforts of faculty, staff and students working together to continue the excellence in our academic program," said Boadu, assistant department head for undergraduate student affairs in the department of agricultural economics. "This third win, and the successes of our students in research and leadership, demonstrate that our students are motivated and committed to maintaining the winning tradition of our great university," he said.

The format, which is similar to that used by the game show "Jeopardy," tests students on their knowledge of agricultural economics. Questions are broken into eight categories: resources/policy, macroeconomics, microeconomics, agricultural business/finance, marketing, management, quantitative, and potpourri (assorted mixed questions.)
