Most crops in fair to excellent condition

There were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Aug. 24, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, Aug. 25.

Topsoil moisture was 5 percent very short, 35 percent short, 58 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Wind damage was 11 percent light and 4 percent moderate. Hail damage was 3 percent light, 1 percent moderate and 2 percent severe.

Alfalfa was mostly good with the fourth cutting 77 percent complete and the fifth cutting 18 percent complete. Cotton was mostly good with 90 percent setting bolls and 3 percent opening bolls.

Corn ranged from fair to excellent with 74 percent dough and 28 percent dent. Irrigated sorghum was mostly good with 15 percent coloring and 1 percent mature. Dry sorghum was mostly fair with 60 percent headed and 35 percent coloring.

Peanuts were mostly fair with 80 percent pegging. Lettuce was 90 percent planted. Chiles were mostly good with 57 percent green harvested. Apples were mostly fair to good. Pecans were mostly good.
