IFBF members gather to discuss climate change, CRP, rural road infrastructure and moreIowa Voting delegates of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation will be taking the last step in their policy development process when Iowa's largest grassroots farm organization gathers in Des Moines Sept. 4 and 5 to set policy on a variety of key issues important to all Iowans. Over the past seven months, all 100 county Farm Bureaus have been gathering the opinions of their members and discussing issues impacting agriculture and rural Iowa. Those issues culminate in what promises to be a lively discussion at the Farm Bureau Summer Policy Conference. "Our organization takes great pride in our grassroots policy development process, and it provides solid direction for our organization on the key issues," said IFBF President Craig Lang. "Some of the issues voting delegates will focus on during the session include energy policy and climate change, road infrastructure, our K-12 education system and CRP," said Lang. "Energy policy is at the forefront, as it is being discussed on both the state and national level and impacts everyone." "High feed and fuel costs have also taken a bite out of livestock profits in 2008, so measures to assist livestock producers, such as opening up CRP acres for grazing, may also lead to discussion at this year's conference. And, since the floods caused extensive damage to rural roads, washing out bridges and cutting off access to Iowa's more remote regions, we also expect road infrastructure to be discussed," said Lang. This is the third annual Summer Policy Conference for Iowa Farm Bureau. The policy-setting conference was moved up from the traditional annual meeting December date, two years ago, to give members an earlier start on grassroots implementation of state and national policy. The Summer Policy Conference begins at 10 a.m. Sept. 4 with an address by IFBF President Lang. Adjournment is scheduled for 3 p.m., Sept. 5, as resolutions are adopted. Lunch will be provided for attending media both days.
