Hereford youth receive Poll-ette Founders ScholarshipsAudrey Hambright, Chapman, Kan., and Drew Perez, Nara Visa, N.M., were awarded $750 Poll-ette Founders Scholarships on July 18 at the Junior National Hereford Expo in Kansas City. The scholarships are funded through the Hereford Youth Foundation of America and managed by the National Organization of Poll-ettes. They recognize one male and one female who have made great contributions to the National Junior Hereford Association. The scholarships also honor the women who laid the foundation for the NOP, which was first organized in 1965. Hambright has been very active in both the Kansas Junior Polled Hereford Association and the NJHA. She is a past winner of the Junior Golden Bull Award, NJHA Prospect Award and the KJPHA Senior Herdsman award. In high school, she was involved with 4-H, National Honor Society and yearbook staff. Hambright has also won her share of awards in the showring including, titles at the state and national level showing a reserve division champion at the American Royal Junior Show. Hambright will be transferring to Kansas State University this fall after attending Colby Community College in Colby, Kan., where she will pursue a degree in agriculture business with an emphasis on the beef industry. Perez has been very active in NJHA, 4-H and FFA. He has been a spokesman for the breed as the New Mexico voting delegate at the JNHE and has worked on promotional exhibitions for Certified Hereford Beef. Perez has served in leadership positions at the state and national level and is a veteran of the showring. He won reserve intermediate showman at the 2004 JNHE and most recently was named the All-American Individual in junior college livestock judging. In addition to receiving the Poll-ette Founders Scholarship, Perez was honored with the Herdsman of the Year Award and also won the Ed Bible Scholarship in Kansas City. Perez recently graduated from Butler Community College and will be continuing his education this fall at Texas Tech majoring in agriculture economics and plans to compete on the livestock judging team. The NJHA is one of the most active junior programs in the country with approximately 3,000 members. The NJHA's mission is to create and promote enthusiasm for the breed while providing opportunities through leadership, education and teamwork.
