Hereford scholarships honor Ed Bible
The scholarships were presented by the National Organization of Poll-ettes and the Hereford Youth Foundation of America. They are designed to help finance higher education for National Junior Hereford Association members who excel in communication, leadership, and Hereford and agriculture-related activities. Bible joined the American Polled Hereford Association staff in 1973 and for 25 years supported the senior, junior and Poll-ette associations. He positively influenced the Hereford breed and industry. Therefore, NOP and HYFA offer four annual scholarships in his honor. Joshua VanDeWalle, Cedar Rapids, Neb., received the first-place $1,000 scholarship. He has been a member of the NJHA for 14 years and has served in leadership roles at the state and national level, not only for the Hereford industry, but also 4-H and FFA. Joshua has won many awards including an American FFA Degree, first place in the NJHA senior illustrated speech and team marketing contests and exhibited the champion Hereford bull at the Nebraska State Fair FFA show. He attends the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and plans to graduate in 2009 with a double major in animal science and agricultural education. Drew Perez, Nara Visa, N.M., was the second-place winner, receiving $750. He has been very active in NJHA along with 4-H and FFA. He was most recently named the All-American Individual in junior college livestock judging. In addition to winning the Ed Bible Scholarship, Perez was honored with the Herdsman of the Year award and the Poll-ette Founders Scholarship. Perez's exhibition of market and breeding cattle extends from the local to national level. He won reserve intermediate showman at the 2004 JNHE and placed among the top ten senior finalists this year. Perez recently earned his associate degree at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan., and will continue his education this fall at Texas Tech majoring in agriculture economics. Katlin Mulvaney, Opelika, Ala., was awarded the third-place $500 scholarship. She has participated in many activities at the high school and university level. Mulvaney is a NJHA Board of Director, Auburn University Agriculture Ambassador and has served as president of the Alabama Junior Hereford Association and the Alabama Junior Cattlemen's Association. She has had tremendous success showing Hereford cattle, winning the Alabama National Fair reserve champion heifer and four state showmanship titles. Mulvaney is a senior at Auburn University majoring in agriculture communications with a minor in agricultural leadership and political science. Nicole Starr, Manawa, Wis., was awarded the fourth-place scholarship, receiving $250. She has been a member of the NJHA and Wisconsin Junior Hereford Association for 13 years. Starr has also been deeply involved in 4-H and FFA. She recently retired from the NJHA board where she served as director, reporter and treasurer. She has won many awards in the showring including grand champion heifer at the Wisconsin State Fair and champion spring heifer calf division at the 2008 National Western Stock Show in Denver. Starr attends Michigan State University majoring in animal science/agribusiness. The NJHA is one of the most active junior programs in the country with approximately 3,000 members. The NJHA's mission is to create and promote enthusiasm for the breed while providing opportunities through leadership, education and teamwork.
