Workshop to focus on sustainability, economics of treesMissouri On Friday, Oct. 10, Missouri Farmers Union will co-host a woodlot management and farm forestry workshop at the U.S. Forest Service Building near Doniphan, Mo. Other sponsors include the National Farmers Union and Ozark Quality Hardwoods Cooperative, originally established two years ago by Farmers Union members who operate a processing facility that kilns-dry milled hardwoods. The workshop is open and free to the public and runs from 8:30 a.m. until lunch at 12:30 p.m. Topics will focus on helping farmers manage and turn their woodlots into sustainable, productive acres and to help them earn farm income from woody biomass and renewable energy. "There is significant untapped potential in rural America for family farmers and ranchers to establish new markets or new enterprises for the use of trees on their farms," MFU President Russ Kremer said. "For those who value forestland, co-ops, soil and water quality, wildlife habitat and timber stand improvement, this workshop is a chance for landowners to learn how to add value to their forests." About seventy-one percent of the nation's timberland is in private hands, with Missouri ranking eighth in the nation for the percent of forest land held by private owners (80 percent). Featured speakers include: Doug Enyart, certified forester; Steve Paes, Missouri Department of Conservation resource forester; John Tuttle, MDC director of forest products marketing; and, Jeff Moser, National Farmers Union director of economic and co-op development. The workshop is being held in conjunction with the 1 p.m. annual meeting of Ozark Quality Hardwoods Co-op. The workshop also kicks-off the third annual Ozark Regional TIMBERFEST, Oct. 10 and 11, at the Ripley County Fairgrounds. 10/6/08 Date: 10/2/08
