Wind farm more than half done in northeast Nebraska

BLOOMFIELD, Neb. (AP)--The Elkhorn Ridge wind farm in northeast Nebraska is now more than halfway complete.

Construction site superintendent Greg Swenson says his crews have already put 15 wind turbines.

Once completed, the 80-megawatt wind farm four miles north of Bloomfield, Neb., will generate power from 27 turbines.

The Elkhorn Ridge project is expected to be running by the end of the year so developers get federal production tax credits. The credits expire at the end of 2008 unless Congress renews the incentives to wind energy developers.

Construction manager Jack Kosman says people from the surrounding area all seem supportive of the project.

The Nebraska Public Power District has agreed to buy power from the Elkhorn Ridge wind farm.
