Strategy vs. System: Grazing for Desired Outcomes symposium Dec. 2 to 4Colorado Ranchers, grazers, and range professionals across the west and Midwest are invited to attend the "Grazing Systems vs. Strategy: Grazing for Desired Outcomes" conference. Speakers with experience on three different continents and across the western United States are coming to be part of this once in a lifetime event. The presentations are sure to challenge everyone's ideas about the 'how to' of grazing management. The conference will be held at the Fort Collins, Colo., Marriott beginning at 12:30 p.m., Dec. 2. It will end with the free Nick Petry Workshop, Dec. 4 which will close at 3 p.m. The opening presentations Dec. 2 will address 'Plant/Animal Interaction on Landscapes'. Speakers include Pat Reece CEO, Prairie and Montane Enterprises who will discuss 'Timing of Grazing and its Effects on Individual Plants.' The morning session Dec. 3, 'Animal Selectivity--Implications for Management and Research Design' will begin at 8 a.m. Among the presenters will be Fred Provenza, one of the world's foremost animal behavior researchers. A terrific speaker, Fred will share 'Why Animals Do What They Do--Influences of Animal Experience on Grazing Choices.' Also on Dec. 3, Richard Teague will discuss 'Why Researchers and Practitioners Report Different Results.' Richard grew up in Africa, works in north Texas and is an outspoken proponent of planned grazing management. 'Managing Grazing for Desired Ecological Outcomes' on Dec. 3 will be of the most interest to ranchers. Jim Richardson will give a lively presentation about how 'Grazing Management Affects Soils and the Water Cycle.' Terry Messmer will share how grazing management has been used to improve wildlife habitat in the Dakotas and Utah. Brien Norton, from Kalgoorlie, Australia, will address 'Grazing Research and Grazing Management: Where Theory Meets Reality.' Afterword, registrants are invited to stay for pizza and beverages during a question and answer session with all of the speakers from the previous two days. Dec. 4 will be the Nick Petry Workshop portion of the conference. "Planning Grazing Management: A Key to Profits" will begin at 8 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. Speakers include Colorado ranchers John Welch, Jim Howell, and Grady Grissom, plus Pat Reece and Rick Danvir, manager, Deseret Land and Livestock. Topics Dec. 4 include: 'How do I successfully adapt management strategies to my operation?' 'How can grazing management be used to reduce risk?' 'Grazing strategies that work for different production environments' and 'Increasing profit and production with multi-species grazing.' All of the day's speakers will be available for questions and discussion.
