Nebraska lawmakers to study horse racing

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP)--As they head into the homestretch before the legislative session, state lawmakers are taking a close look at horse racing.

The Legislature's General Affairs Committee will meet Sept. 18 to discuss the sport as part of a study prompted by state Sen. Vickie McDonald of St. Paul.

McDonald wants to measure the financial impact horse racing has on the state and communities.

Horse racing is in some limbo following the Legislature's decision earlier this year to move the Nebraska State Fair from Lincoln to Grand Island.

Horse racing at State Fair Park is expected to end once the University of Nebraska takes over the property to build a research park that will be a blend of university facilities and private businesses.
