Kansas Cattlemen stress the importance of proper labeling

Kansas

In a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Kansas Cattlemen's Association expressed their contempt over the regulations that allows United States beef to placed under the label "Product of USA, Canada, and Mexico."

"U.S. producers have been awaiting the implementation of country-of-origin labeling for six years. The intent of this labeling law is to allow consumers to know where their food comes from; however, by labeling USA, Mexican, and Canadian beef under one multi-national label, consumers have no more information than if no label was on the package at all," states KCA Executive Director, Brandy Carter.

KCA is pleased to see COOL implemented, but KCA told USDA that their final interim rule completely defies the intent of the law.

KCA also recommended that USDA allow visual inspection of cattle to eliminate and/or identify country of origin. As well, it was recommended that food service establishments be required to comply with COOL regulations.

After reviewing the entire interim rule, KCA believes that using affidavits to determine and verify country of origin eases the burden of proof, simplifies the process, and provides adequate record keeping to comply with COOL regulations. Kansas Cattlemen's staff is on hand to answer questions and concerns regarding COOL compliance. Producers and consumers may call KCA at 785-238-1483.
