Fall family fun close to homeColorado Leaves are changing and temperatures are cooling, two sure signs that fall has arrived. This is the perfect time of year to experience Colorado agricultural activities such as pumpkin patches and corn mazes. To help people explore agritourism in the state, the Colorado Department of Agriculture lists a variety of seasonal activities online at www.coloradoagritourism.com. "Families are looking for fun fall activities," said Wendy White, marketing specialist for the Colorado Department of Agriculture. "And you don't have to travel far to experience local agriculture." Online resources include a list featuring corn mazes across the state as well as pumpkin festivals and pumpkin patches. The site also lists wineries, farmers' markets, birding trails, agricultural festivals, dude ranches and more. According to a survey conducted by Colorado State University in conjunction with the Colorado Department of Agriculture, 13.2 million visitors experienced Colorado agritourism in 2006, contributing $2.2 billion to the state economy. Pumpkin tip: When selecting your pumpkin, choose clean, well-shaped pumpkins with no cracks in the rind and avoid pumpkins with soft spots or decay. More than just a beautiful decoration, pumpkins are nutritious. They are fat free, sodium free, a good source of vitamin C and high in vitamin A.
