Crop progress behind normal, range and pastures lack moisture

During the week ending Sept. 28, there were dry, cool nights and warm days, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Wyoming Field Office, Sept. 29.

Wyoming was dry last week with continued cold nights and warm days. High temperatures ranged from high 60s to low 90s. Low temperatures were in the low 20s to the low 40s. Topsoil moisture levels rated adequate or better decreased to 61 percent, 4 points below the previous week but 24 points up from the average. Subsoil moisture was rated at 42 percent adequate or better, 18 points above the average.

During last week an average of 6.9 days were suitable for fieldwork. Crop progress remained behind the average with unchanged crop conditions. Almost all winter wheat was planted with 74 percent emerged, 12 points below the previous year but 5 points above the average. Seventy-three percent of dry beans were windrowed and 50 percent combined, 14 points below 2007 and 9 points below the average. Ninety-two percent of corn was in the dough stage, 73 percent dented and 40 percent mature, 18 points below 2007 and 3 points below the 5-year average. Three-fourths of corn has been harvested for silage, 6 points below the previous year and 9 points below the average. Forty percent of alfalfa has been cut for the third time, 34 points below last year and 22 points below the average.

Range and pasture conditions were reported at 39 percent good or better, which decreased by 3 points from last week but was 15 points above the average. Livestock looked good going into fall.
