4-H Gala Oct. 11 to support urban 4-H programsColorado 4-H is the largest out-of-school youth program in the U.S., with more than seven million members and 500,000 teen and adult volunteers. Studies have demonstrated that 4-H youth are less likely to engage in risky behavior such as alcohol consumption and drug use, and are more likely to have positive relationships with adults and better grades in school. The Metro Area Supports 4-H (M*A*S*H) Gala will be held in Denver at the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, Oct. 11, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event includes cocktails, dinner and entertainment. The 4-H Foundation and the Colorado State University state 4-H office have teamed up to present the gala to help raise funds for the Denver Metro area 4-H program as well as expand the recognition of 4-H and Extension programs statewide. Because there are no organized 4-H clubs in the county of Denver, the Colorado state 4-H program is undertaking a major effort to expand youth engagement in the city. The goal of the expansion is to attract 1,000 new 4-H members into organized clubs within three years. This will provide positive youth development opportunities for young people in the Denver area--there are 100,000 potential 4-H age youth in Denver County that may benefit from this proven youth development program. The United States is falling dangerously behind other nations in developing its future workforce of scientists, engineers, and technology experts. To ensure global competitiveness, steps are being taken to prepare the next generation of science, engineering, and technology leaders. Currently, 4-H Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) programs reach more than five million youth with hands-on learning experiences to encourage young minds and fill the pipeline of young leaders proficient in science. Colorado State University 4-H Youth Development programs teach over 100,000 youth (5 to 18 years old) life skills each year through hands-on learning projects in over 40 interest areas, including rapidly growing programs in science, engineering and technology. The 4-H Youth Development Program--with its direct connection to the research and resources of the Extension System's 106 land-grant universities and colleges--is strategically positioned to strengthen U.S. global competitiveness and leadership. Nationwide 4-H hopes to address the nation's critical challenge by preparing 1 million new young people to excel in science, engineering, and technology by 2013.
