West Plains regional cattle sales report

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 3,000 head Oct. 21, compared to 2,248 head last week and 2,779 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to last week, steers at 350 to 450 pounds were $7 to $10 higher, 450 to 700 pounds were $2 to $5 higher, and over 700 pounds were steady. Heifers under 550 pounds were steady to $3 higher, over 550 pounds were steady to $2 lower, with the most pressure on soft and fleshy calves. The supply was moderate. Demand was moderate to good, with continued improvement for higher quality, uniform sets of calves preferably having respiratory shots and hopefully weaned. Buyers were becoming even more selective for quality and performance not only in feedlots, but packing plants as well. The supply consisted of 59% steers and 41% heifers, with nearly 37% weighing over 600 pounds.
