Rain keeps farmers out of fieldsKansas Precipitation was very heavy across the state, with most counties receiving greater than 2 inches of rain and upward of 4 inches in some areas during the week ending Oct. 19, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office, Oct. 20. Producers across the state averaged only two days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture is rated as 2 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 22 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated as 2 percent very short, 9 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Primary farm activities involved planting wheat, and harvesting corn, soybeans, sorghum, and sunflowers. Eighty-one percent of the wheat has been planted compared to 80 percent in 2007 and 85 percent for the 5-year average. Sixty-seven percent has emerged, compared to 52 percent previous year and 60 percent for the 5-year average. Wheat condition is rated as 2 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 69 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Ninety-six percent of the corn has matured, compared to 100 percent for both last year and the 5-year average. Fifty-two percent has been harvested, compared to 84 percent for 2007 and 82 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Ninety-six percent of the corn has matured, compared to 100 percent for both last year and the 5-year average. Fifty-two percent has been harvested, compared to 84 percent for 2007 and 82 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Seventy percent of the sorghum is mature, compared to 91 percent last year and 82 percent for the 5-year average. Twenty-one percent has been harvested, compared to 44 percent last year and 41 percent for the 5- year average. Sorghum condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Ninety percent of the soybeans are dropping leaves, compared to 95 percent last year and 96 percent for the 5-year average. Fifty-three percent has been harvested, compared to 51 percent previous year and 54 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition is rated as 4 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 16 percent excellent. Eighty-five percent of the cotton is in the bolls open stage, compared to 76 percent last year and 69 percent for the 5-year average. Cotton condition is rated as 10 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 45 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Sixty-nine percent of the sunflowers are mature, compared to 91 percent for last year and 84 for the 5-year average. Twelve percent has been harvested, compared to 50 percent in 2007 and 38 percent for the 5-year average. Sunflower condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 58 percent good, and 10 percent excellent.. 10/27/08 Date: 10/23/08
