Producers to evaluate brand programSouth Dakota Fourteen South Dakotans representing all facets of the cattle industry as well as state and county government have joined forces to conduct an in-depth review of the state brand program. According to Vaughn Meyer, a Reva, S.D., rancher who will represent S.D. Farmers Union on the committee, the South Dakota Livestock Industry Brand Inspection Program Evaluation Committee includes agricultural producers, businessmen, state legislators and a county commissioner. "The industry-created evaluation committee will address concerns that have arisen since the transfer of brand inspection programs from industry management to state management this past summer," he said. "The committee's goal is to investigate, evaluate and recommend solutions in response to allegations that the South Dakota Brand Board is ineffectively administrating the brand inspection program in South Dakota," said Meyer. According to Meyer, the committee members will seek comments and suggestions from livestock owners, transporters, marketers and buyers who depend on livestock brand inspection for their livelihoods. Comments and suggestions will be evaluated and used to formulate solutions to improve the integrity and effectiveness of the state brand program. The committee seeks solutions and improvements to the brand inspection process that will facilitate harmony within the South Dakota livestock industry and improve relations with adjoining state brand inspection programs. To comment on current brand board laws, policy, administration, investigations and implementation brand owners are encouraged to contact a committee member.
