Oklahoma fifth grader wins National Arbor Day poster competitionOklahoma Oklahoma produces its fair share of national champions and Michelle Holiman, fifth grader from Maryetta School in Stilwell, Okla., is no exception. Michelle trumped state winners from every state in the country to take first place honors in the prestigious Arbor Day National Poster Contest in 2008. As the national winner, Michelle received a $1,000 savings bond and a trip to Nebraska with her parents and her art teacher, Samilou Smith. While there, Michelle rode on a float in the National Arbor Day parade and her winning poster was part of a traveling exhibit that toured the country and even was displayed on an electronic sign board in New York City's Time Square. "Every November I look forward to receiving poster entries from across the state," stated Christina Stallings, Oklahoma Forestry Services education coordinator. "Each one is unique, wonderful and a winner in my opinion! Winning the national contest was the ultimate reward and recognition for all of the students' hard work." The competition is underway for the 2009 winner. All fifth grade level students are eligible to enter. They are not required to enter as part of a school classroom--scout groups, home school associations, etc., are all invited to participate. Deadline for entering Oklahoma's competition is Nov. 21, 2008. The theme for 2009 is "Trees are Terrific in Cities and Towns!" Full contest details can be obtained by contacting contest coordinator, Christina Stallings, at 405-522-6158 or christina.stallings@oda.state.ok.us. 10/27/08 Date: 10/23/08
