Nebraska Companion Animal Satellite Conference offers career information

Nebraska

An Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 Nebraska Companion Animal Career Satellite Conference will increase youth and adult knowledge and understanding of the companion animal industry.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension and College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources satellite conference, broadcast from 7 to 9 p.m., will aid in career exploration and college preparation for Nebraska youth interested in the companion animal industry, said Lisa Karr-Lilienthal, UNL companion animal specialist.

"Companion animals play an important role in our lives," Karr-Lilienthal said. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, Americans spent $41.2 billion on their pets in 2007. That number is estimated to increase an additional $2 billion in 2008, she said.

As the industry continues to expand, more career possibilities are becoming available, Karr-Lilienthal said.

The satellite conference will provide information about the scope of the companion animal industry, career opportunities and higher education options. It will feature industry speakers, video-produced interviews with companion animal professionals, current and former students and CASNR representatives who can answer questions about the college admissions process.

The Oct. 27 broadcast will focus on career exploration, while the Nov. 3 broadcast will focus on college preparation. Participants are encouraged to attend both broadcasts. Satellite locations include: Ainsworth, Ainsworth High School; Alliance, Box Butte County Extension Office; Aurora, Hamilton County Extension Office; Beatrice, Gage County Extension Office; Blair, Washington County Extension Office; Columbus, Platte County Extension Office; Curtis, Frontier County Extension Office; Dakota City, Dakota County Extension Office; Ithaca, Saunders County Extension Office; Kearney, Buffalo County Extension Office; Lincoln, UNL's Chase Hall, East Campus; Omaha, Douglas/Sarpy County Extension Office; Ord, Valley County Ag Complex Technology Center; Rushville, Sheridan County Extension Office; Seward, Seward County Extension Office and Valentine, Cherry County Extension Office.

Door prizes and other incentives, including a $500 CASNR scholarship, will be awarded to those youth who complete the program.

For more information, contact a local UNL Extension Office or program's website at companionanimal@unl.edu.
