MU 2008 swine institute set for Nov. 11, 12This year's theme is 'Weathering the Storm' Missouri The University of Missouri Extension Commercial Agriculture 2008 Swine Institute will take place Nov. 11 and 12 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Columbia. This year's theme, "Weathering the Storm," will address forces affecting the Missouri swine industry and offer insights on how to face these challenges. This year's topics include environmental pressures; improving feed efficiency to compensate for higher feed and fuel costs; the use of alternative, lower-cost feeds; improving energy use; and thermal comfort of pigs. The 2008 Swine Institute will provide strategies to help producers monitor and manage with more efficiency. Mike Brumm of the Brumm Swine Consultancy in North Mankato, Minn., will be a featured speaker. National Hog Farmer magazine named Brumm one of the top 50 people influencing the swine industry in the last 50 years. The agricultural activist Trent Loos will be the keynote speaker. Loos, a sixth-generation farmer, will speak on his mission to share the positive story of production agriculture with consumers and the world. His radio show, "Loos Tales," is heard daily by 3 million listeners on nearly 100 stations across the Midwest. Additional sponsors are FCS Financial, Missouri Pork Association, Triumph Foods, Cargill Pork, MFA Inc, Premium Standard Farms and Murphy-Brown. The Institute begins Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. and concludes at noon the following day. Pre-registration is encouraged.
