Cotton harvest gets underway

New Mexico

During the week ending Oct. 19, there were 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, Oct. 20.

Topsoil moisture was 4 percent very short, 20 percent short 72 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Wind damage was 3 percent light, 2 percent moderate and 1 percent severe.

Alfalfa was mostly good with sixth cutting 32 percent complete. Cotton was mostly good with 83 percent of bolls opening and 6 percent harvested. Corn was mostly good to excellent with 98 percent mature and 25 percent grain harvested. Irrigated sorghum was mostly good with 95 percent coloring and 46 percent mature. Dry sorghum was mostly fair with 68 percent coloring and 21 percent mature.

Chiles were mostly good with 38 percent of the red harvest completed. Peanuts were mostly fair with 45 percent harvested. Pecans were mostly good.

Cattle and sheep were mostly good. Range and pastures were mostly good to fair.
