Corn harvest gets underway

Minnesota

Farmers harvested nearly 20 percent of the corn in Minnesota as of Oct. 19, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Minnesota Field Office, Oct. 20.

Harvest advanced even though the average statewide moisture content of the corn being harvested was 23 percent, which is above the five-year average of 20 percent. Soybean harvest continued to make progress as well and potato harvest was almost complete.

The average temperature for the week was 46.7 degrees, 0.4 degrees above normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of Oct. 17, were 1 percent very short, 9 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 18 percent surplus. Statewide, on average, there were 3.9 days suitable for fieldwork during the week.

As of Oct. 19, 95 percent of the corn was mature, compared to 100 percent last year and 99 percent average. Nineteen percent of the corn crop was harvested, compared to 51 percent last year and 43 percent average. Soybean harvest reached 83 percent complete, compared to 85 percent last year and 88 percent average.

Sugar beet harvest was at 80 percent complete, compared to 78 percent last year and 87 percent average. Potato harvest was at 98 percent, compared to 93 percent last year and 95 percent average.

As of Oct. 17, 70 percent of corn was rated in good or excellent condition. Sixty-eight percent of sunflowers and 45 percent of pasture were rated in good or excellent condition.
