CSU Extension presents annual honors

Colorado

Colorado State University Extension recently recognized individuals for outstanding contributions to Colorado families, enterprises and communities. CSU Extension provides Colorado educational programs on topics such as the latest agricultural production technologies, natural resource management, family, consumer and health science, horticulture and community development as well as hosting Colorado 4-H youth programs.

--Alton Scofield Distinguished Service Award: The Alton Scofield Distinguished Service Award is given to an individual who is dedicated to superior service in Extension. Luann Boyer has served the citizens of northeastern Colorado as the family and consumer science agent since 1982. She exemplifies the Extension tradition of identifying community needs, finding creative methods to solve problems and working with tireless energy and enthusiasm to satisfy the needs. Luann has teamed with others inside and outside of CSU and Extension to tackle obesity, diabetes and parenting with outstanding results. A Healthier Weigh has consistently attracted new clientele to Extension who lose an average of 5 percent of their body weight. She collaborated with Northeast Colorado Health Department to write a diabetes education grant. After demonstrating three years of success with the initial program, she piloted the first Dining with Diabetes class in Colorado.

--Extension Team Award: The Extension Team Award recognizes superior service by a group that successfully works on a special initiative or goal. This year, Extension honors the Building Farmers Team for developing and building a program to keep small farmers on the land and increase the likelihood of success for new small farmers. Led by Boulder County Extension agent, Adrian Card, the team provided program planning and instruction. In 2008, the Building Farmers program engaged 17 farmers with 100 percent of them indicating that the program provided excellent information and 75 percent indicating that they would make changes to their operations based on what they learned in the program. Building Farmers will be expanding in the state in 2009.

Team members are Adrian Card, Dawn Thilmany, (Extension Ag Economist), John Deering (Ag and Business Regional Extension Specialist--Golden Plains), Boyd Byelich (District Conservationist Boulder County, NRCS), Mark Menagh (Executive Director, Boulder County Famers' Markets).

--Extension Diversity Award: The Diversity Award is given in recognition of superior service to the diverse needs of clientele through Colorado State Extension education. Bill Nobles, Archuleta County Director, worked with a variety of ethnic youth including Native Americans, Hispanic and Caucasian youth from New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado educating them about Europe and building social skills through the Ambassadorial European Odyssey Program. The People to People Student Ambassadors Program was introduced in the Four Corners area this year and Bill Nobles saw an opportunity to further youth leadership development. Twenty-eight young people from the Four Corners area traveled for twenty-one days experiencing hands-on learning opportunities and immersing themselves in the arts and different European cultures. Global understanding is developed one young person at a time. Parents today still describe how their child was transformed into a young adult with newfound confidence and maturity through this experience.

--F. A. Anderson Award: The F.A. Anderson Award recognizes outstanding performance by an Extension professional throughout their Extension career. Connie Cecil lives and breathes the 4-H motto--to make the best better. Connie's efforts since joining the state 4-H team have brought the Colorado 4-H curriculum into the 21st century. Through Connie's leadership project listings, manual requirements, exhibit requirements tip sheets, and score sheets are all available on line. Due to Connie's work partnering with the Colorado State Fair for online access, the 2008 State Fair results for exhibits were posted on the 4-H website the Monday following the judging. Connie exemplifies commitment to continuous improvement.
