West Plains regional cattle salesThe Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 2,250 head Oct. 14, compared to 2,172 head last week and 3,065 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, steers were steady to $2 higher, with several toppy calves under pounds were $4 to $6 higher than last week's sharp downturn. Heifers under 600 pounds were $3 to $5 higher, over 600 pounds were mostly steady. The supply and demand were light to moderate, with a pinch more interest going on this week, but still little to get excited about from a seller's standpoint and inflated production costs. Cattle board showed some slight gains, with nearby live cattle finally settling up 35 to 52 cents and feeders up 25 to 87 after being up nearly twice that in early goings and acting as though it was chasing the Dow. It's unclear as to the little spark in the auction, other than a few cattle buyers wanting the same thing at the same time, with the majority pretty much demanding respiratory shots. The supply consisted of 48% steers, 11% bulls and 41% heifers, with nearly 35% weighing over 600 pounds.
