Trinity Basin Conservation Foundation to hold annual meeting Oct. 17

Texas

The Trinity River Basin Conservation Foundation will hold its annual membership meeting on Oct. 17 near Crockett.

The event will take place at the 7J Stock Farm, 19300 State Highway 21, about 20 miles southwest of Crockett near the Trinity River, said Jenny Sanders, conservation programs coordinator with the Texas Wildlife Association. Signs will be posted along the road to lead participants to the meeting.

This year's theme is "linkages among urban and rural Texans, conservation and the Trinity River," she said.

The organization was founded in 2005 by property owners in the basin to foster efforts to improve water quality in the Trinity River. Members also share ideas on broadening economic opportunities and restoring some of the land to a more natural state.

"To say the Trinity is important is an understatement," said Dr. Jim Cathey, Texas AgriLife Extension Service wildlife specialist based in College Station.

Cathey has been consulting property owners in the basin on land stewardship and their efforts to improve the environment.

Property owners along the river are counting on the state's plan to improve the Trinity's ecosystem and water quality. The sweeping project, called the Trinity River Basin Environmental Restoration Initiative, was announced by Gov. Rick Perry in September 2005.

Two agencies of the Texas A&M System are leading the Trinity restoration initiative. The Texas Water Resources Institute has been coordinating urban projects, while the Institute for Renewable Natural Resources has been managing rural efforts. Both agencies are units of AgriLife Extension and Texas AgriLife Research.

The annual meeting begins at 5 p.m. with refreshments and an informal social, Sanders said. A barbecue dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. J.K. "Rooter" Brite, a rancher at the Trinity's headwaters, will give the keynote address.

Dinner is $10 and can be paid at the door; annual dues are $20. To register and get directions, contact Sanders at jsanders@twa-mail.org or 361-279-7287.
