By Doug Rich

Like most of you, I have been receiving truckloads of mail from the two presidential candidates. The mail always includes an invitation to share my thoughts about the important issues facing our nation.

After Congress passed the bailout plan, I decided to share my thoughts with Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain. I know they like to call it a rescue plan, but I don't feel very rescued. I sent a strongly worded e-mail to both candidates that left no room for doubt about how I felt about the bailout and waited for a reply.

When I sat down at my computer the next morning, there was an e-mail from Sen. Obama. I gave him points for promptness.

The message began with "Dear Doug," a nice personal touch that is much better than "Mr. Rich" or "Dear Tax Paying Fool." He thanked me for my comments and made a plea for my vote in November.

The second paragraph began with "Thank you for your support." I was stunned. How could he misunderstand my rebuke of his vote for support? I left no room for doubt and fully expected a visit from the FBI or Secret Service.

Two days later, I received a letter from Sen. McCain. I guess he really does not know how to send e-mails. The packet included a very nice photo of the lovely Sarah Palin--so points for McCain.

The letter began with "Dear Doug" followed by the same plea for my vote. Just like Obama's reply, the second paragraph began with "Thank you for your support." How could he be so out of touch? My comments had nothing to do with support of any kind.

Surely, with all the money these two men have collected, they could hire a staffer to separate their mail into two piles--one for people who agree with them and one for people who disagree with them. Then answer them appropriately.

After the last debate, I received an e-mail from Sen. Obama and a letter from Sen. McCain asking me to rate their performance. I gave them both the same answer.

Dear Barack/Dear John,

Sorry, but I missed your debate. I was working overtime to help pay for the bailout of those poor folks on Wall Street.

I hope they appreciate my support.
