Texas Watershed Steward program offered in ComancheTexas A Texas Watershed Steward workshop has been scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Comanche Community Center located at 100 Indian Creek Drive. The free program will be conducted by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board. Jennifer Peterson, AgriLife Extension program specialist at College Station, said the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board and the Brazos River Authority have been working with local groups on a plan to improve the Leon River Watershed's water quality. "Comanche County contains parts of the Leon River Watershed which drains water to the Leon River," Peterson said. "The aim of this program is to help those with land in the watershed improve and protect their water resources by getting involved in local watershed protection and management activities. "Texas Watershed Stewards is a great way to get involved and make a difference in your watershed," she said. Peterson said participants will learn about watershed systems, water quality regulation and monitoring, methods to improve water quality, and community-driven watershed protection and management. She said the training will provide the basic knowledge and tools needed to form a watershed action group, participate in and organize local watershed activities, and become more involved in protecting and enhancing community water resources. Along with the training, participants will receive a copy of the Texas Watershed Steward Curriculum Handbook and a certificate of completion. The program also offers six Dairy Outreach Program area credits; seven American Institute of Certified Planners certificate maintenance credits; seven Texas Board of Professional Engineers continuing education program hours; seven continuing education units (Soil and Water Management) for certified crop advisors; seven State Board for Educator Certification continuing professional education credits; three Texas Floodplain Management Association credits, and three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units in the general category. Lunch will be provided.
