Texas A&M regents tap three for top-tier AgriLife Extension managementTexas The Texas A&M System Board of Regents Sept. 26 approved the appointments of three career employees to top executive positions in the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. Dr. Darrell Dromgoole of Lubbock was named associate director of county programs, Dr. Pete Gibbs of Bryan-College Station, associate director for agriculture, natural resources and community economic development, and Dr. Bonnie McGee of Bryan-College Station, associate director for 4-H, youth development and human sciences. "Nationally, our Extension organization is the largest and most prominent, distinguished by people of the highest caliber," said Dr. Ed Smith, AgriLife Extension director. "We had an outstanding pool of internal candidates for these positions, and we are pleased that these three outstanding individuals are joining our administrative team." In a related move that did not require regental approval, Smith named Dr. Joan Jacobsen of Fort Worth as urban program director and Dr. Chris Boleman of Bryan-College Station as 4-H and youth development program director. All the appointments, which were generated by recent retirements and an administrative reorganization, will take effect on Oct. 1. Dromgoole, who will direct the work of AgriLife Extension agents in counties across Texas, began his 24-year Extension career as an assistant agent in Victoria County. After serving as an Extension agent in Crosby, Calhoun and Collin counties, Dromgoole held regional leadership positions based in Uvalde and Corpus Christi. For the past year, he has been regional program director in Lubbock. He holds a doctorate in agricultural education, awarded by Texas A&M and Texas Tech universities in 2007. Gibbs, who will oversee the development of the agency's educational programs in agriculture and natural resources and community economic development, has been an AgriLife Extension horse specialist since 1988. He has also served as associate department head for animal science and AgriLife Extension program leader for the last two years. Gibbs hold three degrees in animal science from Texas A&M University, the last a doctorate awarded in 1982. McGee, who will lead the agency's programs in human sciences and 4-H and youth development, has served as director of AgriLife Extension urban programs for 11 years. Before that, she was an assistant to the agency director from 1989 to 1997 and served for 15 years as the Extension program leader in home economics in New Hampshire. She holds four degrees from three universities; her doctorate in educational human resource development was awarded by Texas A&M University in 1994. Jacobsen, who has been with AgriLife Extension since 1986, has directed programs in Tarrant County for the last 11 years. She began her Extension career as a home economics agent in Webb County, then administered for five years the agency's Una Vida Mejor project aimed at improving the economies in disadvantaged communities in the Rio Grande Valley. She earned her doctorate in educational administration from the University of Texas in 1997. Boleman has been an AgriLife Extension specialist in organizational development with the department of agricultural leadership, education and communications since 2002. He has two degrees in animal science and a doctorate, awarded in 2003, in agricultural education from Texas A&M University. AgriLife Extension is a part of the Texas A&M System yet funded separately by county, state and federal entities. The agency has more than 1,500 employees, is active in every Texas county and seeks to deliver high-quality, relevant educational programs to the people, businesses and communities of Texas and beyond. 10/20/08 Date: 10/16/08
