Springfield cattle sales report

The Springfield Livestock Marketing Center, Springfield, Mo., reported receipts of 1,082 head Oct. 8, compared to 1,590 head last week and 2,157 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, feeders sold $2 to $4 lower. Holstein steers traded steady to $1 higher. The feeder supply was light to moderate and demand was light to moderate as well. The economy news and uncertainty had as much of an impact at local barns as they did on Wall Street with no one knowing when the bottom would be reached. Locally many buyers did comment that top end cattle and long time yearlings seemed to be at least trying to gather some kind of footing. Although very few buyers seemed to be overly excited about waving the card regardless of what entered the ring. Fall pastures in the area look better than anyone can remember, however many of them seem to be without any cattle also. The feeder supply was made up of 33% steers, 24% Holsteins, 32% heifers, and 11% bulls, with nearly 41% of the feeders tipped the scales over 600 pounds.
