Soybean production up, corn and sorghum down

Kansas corn production is expected to total 493.2 million bushels, 6 percent below the previous forecast and 5 percent less than last year's crop. Acreage harvested for grain, at 3.6 million acres, is down 8 percent from the previous forecast and 3 percent lower than 2007. Corn yields are expected to average 137 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from Sept. 1 but 3 bushels below the previous year. Planted acres are 3.8 million, down 300,000 from the previous forecast and 100,000 less than in 2007.

Sorghum grain production is forecast at 209.0 million bushels, unchanged from the previous forecast, but down 1 percent from last year. Yields are expected to average 76 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month but 4 bushels below last year's yield. Acreage for harvest as grain is 2.75 million acres, unchanged from Sept. 1 but up 100,000 acres from 2007. Acres planted are 2.90 million, up 50,000 from Sept. 1 and 100,000 from 2007.

Soybean production in Kansas is forecast at a record high 115.2 million bushels, up 6 percent from Sept. 1 and 34 percent higher than last year's crop. Acreage for harvest is expected to total 3.2 million acres, up 100,000 acres from Sept. 1 and 23 percent higher than last year. Yields are expected to average 36 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from Sept. 1 and 3 bushels above 2007. Acres planted are 3.3 million, up 100,000 from Sept. 1, and 25 percent higher than 2007. Planted and harvested acres, if realized, are also at record high levels, surpassing the previous highs of 2006.

Kansas sunflower production is forecast at 310.8 million pounds, up 33 percent from last year. Harvested acreage, at 225,000, is up 64,000 acres from last year. The yield is expected to average 1,381 pounds per acre, down 74 pounds from last year.

All hay production is estimated to total 6.84 million tons, up 7 percent from 2007. Harvested acreage is 2.78 million acres, down 4 percent from last year.

Kansas wheat production for 2008 is estimated at 356.0 million bushels, down 3 percent from the August forecast but 25 percent higher than 2007. Yield is estimated at 40.0 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from the August forecast and 7 bushels above 2007. Acres harvested for grain totaled 8.9 million acres, down 500,000 acres from the previous forecast but 300,000 higher than 2007. A total of 9.5 million acres were planted to wheat for harvest in 2008, down 400,000 from the August forecast and 500,000 acres less than the previous year.
