OSU's Zhang named Fellow by the American Society of Agronomy

Oklahoma

Oklahoma State University's Hailin Zhang has been elected to the position of Fellow by the American Society of Agronomy, considered the national organization's most prestigious honor.

ASA has been electing outstanding members to the position of Fellow since 1925, based on their professional achievements and meritorious service. Up to 0.3 percent of the society's active and emeritus members may be elected Fellow.

"Dr. Zhang has built a truly impressive record of significant accomplishments and outstanding service throughout his career," said Dave Porter, head of OSU's department of plant and soil sciences. "It is very fitting that he received this recognition from his peers as being one of the best scientists in the world."

Zhang holds the Santelmann-Warth Distinguished Professorship in OSU's Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. He also serves as Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service nutrient management specialist and director of the division's Soil, Water and Forage Analytical Laboratory.

"His OSU Cooperative Extension and research programs focus on plant nutrient management and environmental protection, which are of vital importance to Oklahomans who reside in both rural and urban settings across the state," Porter said.

In addition to his ASA membership, Zhang is active in the Soil Science Society of America and serves as associate editor of the organization's scientific journal.

Prior to joining the OSU faculty in 1996, Zhang served six years as a soil chemist and director of the Agricultural Testing and Research Laboratory, Navajo Agricultural Products Industry, in Farmington, New Mexico.

Zhang earned his bachelor's degree in soil science from China's Nanjing Agricultural University in 1982. He then moved to the United States and earned his master's degree in soil chemistry from Iowa State University and his doctoral degree in soil chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1986 and 1990, respectively.
