OKC West livestock sales reportThe OKC West Livestock Market Inc., reported receipts of 2,895 head Oct. 15, compared to 3,232 head last week and 3,984 head last year, according to the USDA-Oklahoma Department of Agriculture Market News, Oklahoma City, Okla. Compared to last week, feeder steers were steady to $2 lower, except 800 to 900 pounds were steady to $2 higher. Feeder heifers not fully tested on the number one muscled, however second grades selling stronger than same grades last week. Demand was good for feeder cattle despite the sharp declines in the commodity markets. Calf market was lightly tested but a firm undertone was noted. Several farmers present and active in the calf trade. Rains moved across the state and has improved the outlook for wheat pasture. Financial markets took a big hit again and this spilled over into the commodity markets sending them sharply lower. The supply consisted of 81% over 600 pounds, 8% under 600 pounds, 11% cows and bulls. The total receipts consisted of 22% heifers. Slaughter cows and bulls were steady to $2 higher. Packer demand was moderate to good. The total cow numbers included several nice young angus cows from one consignment many short bred or open. These cows expected to sell each week for the next 4 to 5 weeks. A total of 310 cows and bulls sold with 37% going to packers.
