Most counties get at least half inch rainKansas Precipitation was heavy across the state, with most counties receiving greater than half an inch of rain during the week ending Oct. 12, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office, Oct. 14. Producers across the state averaged 5 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture is rated as 1 percent very short, 11 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated as 5 percent very short, 12 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Primary farm activities involved cutting hay, planting wheat, and harvesting corn, soybeans, sorghum, and sunflowers. Seventy-nine percent of the wheat has been planted compared to 67 percent in 2007 and 75 percent for the 5-year average. Fifty-one percent has emerged, compared to 34 percent previous year and 44 percent for the 5-year average. Wheat condition is rated as 2 percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 65 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Ninety-two percent of corn has matured, compared to 100 percent last year and 99 percent for the 5-year average. Forty-five percent has been harvested, compared to 79 percent for 2007 and 75 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition is rated as 3 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Ninety-five percent of the sorghum is coloring, compared to 100 percent last year and 97 percent for the 5-year average. Fifty-six percent is rated mature, compared to 85 percent for 2007 and 72 percent for the 5-year average. Seventeen percent has been harvested, compared to 34 percent last year and 31 percent for the 5-year average. Sorghum condition is rated as 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Ninety-five percent of the sorghum is coloring, compared to 100 percent last year and 97 percent for the 5-year average. Fifty-six percent is rated mature, compared to 85 percent for 2007 and 72 percent for the 5-year average. Seventeen percent has been harvested, compared to 34 percent last year and 31 percent for the 5-year average. Sorghum condition is rated as 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Eighty- eight percent of soybeans are dropping leaves, compared to 90 percent last year and 92 percent for the 5-year average. Forty-six percent has been harvested, compared to 39 percent previous year and 42 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition is rated as 3 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 21 percent excellent. Seventy-five percent of cotton is in the bolls open stage, compared to 67 percent last year and 63 percent for the 5-year average. Cotton condition is rated as 5 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Ninety-one percent of sunflowers are in the bracts yellow stage, the same as the previous year but behind the 5-year average of 92 percent. Fifty-one percent are mature, compared to 74 percent for last year and 71 for the 5-year average. Ten percent has been harvested, compared to 25 percent in 2007 and 26 percent for the 5-year average. Sunflower condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 12 percent excellent.
