Major County young cattlemen exhibit at State FairOklahoma
The State Fair of Oklahoma was held Sept. 11 to 21. It was the beginning of the second century for the Oklahoma State Fair. The fair provides an avenue for cattlemen to promote their cattle. Continuing in the cattle business from Major County were four young men that exemplify the excellent young people that come from this area. Justin Bedwell, the son of Jeff and Diana Bedwell, exhibited the Champion Jr. and Open Shorthorn heifer. Justin is a senior at Fairview High School. His family has been involved in the cattle business for many years. The heifer he was exhibiting was raised by his sister Jennifer. Ryan Pullan, the son of Randy and Stephanie Pullan, exhibited the Champion Jr. Bred and Owned Shorthorn heifer. He also exhibited the Reserve Champion open heifer. Ryan is a senior at Aline-Cleo. He stated, "this was a great way to end my junior show career." Ryan has already had an exciting senior year. He has been selected as a national proficiency award winner finalist and will be competing in that contest the end of October at the National FFA convention. Levon and Lathan Nichols, the sons of Kyndell and Michelle Nichols from Ringwood, exhibited Hereford heifers at the State Fair. Levon's March heifer was Champion Jr. Hereford heifer and Bred and Owned heifer. In addition, his November heifer was Reserve Division winner in the junior show. His March heifer then won her division in the open show. Lathan Nichols exhibited an April 2007 and November 2007 heifer. He won a division in the junior show and was reserve division in the open show behind his brother. Levon had exhibited the Champion Hereford Heifer at the Tulsa State Fair in 2004, but stated, "this win was much better because I raised this heifer." Justin, Ryan, Levon and Lathan began showing together in 4H. Even though the boys have been a part of different FFA chapters, they have always looked forward to spending time together and helping each other at livestock shows. Levon graduated May 2008 and Justin and Ryan will graduate in May 2009, but each are planning a future in agriculture and Oklahoma. 10/20/08 Date: 10/16/08 Advertisement
