Joplin regional cattle sales report

The Joplin Regional Stockyards, Joplin, Mo., reported receipts of 2,600 head Oct. 13, compared to 2,729 head last week and 3,989 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steer calves were steady, heifer calves were steady to $3 higher, and yearlings were steady to $2 higher. Demand was moderate, and supply moderate to light. Live Cattle, Feeder Cattle and Grain Future contracts posted positive gains. The Dow rebounded after recently setting a record for losses in a single week. Cattle buyers were more active than in the recent sale, but most remained cautious. Cattle producers were holding calves and waiting to see how the markets were going to shake to out. This year options are available for producers as stock water is plentiful, fall pastures are in good condition and hay barns are full. The feeder supply included 42% steers, 44% heifers, 14% bulls, with 43% over 600 pounds.

Large frame 1, 450 to 500 lbs., 101.00 to 105.00; 500 to 575 lbs., 91.00 to 96.00; package 630 lbs., calves 90.00; package 777 lbs., 87.00; package 822 lbs., 85.00.
