Greenhouse IPM workshop slated at OSUOklahoma Individuals interested in learning more about greenhouse Integrated Pest Management practices as it pertains to greenhouse personnel should mark their calendar for Nov. 5 and attend the Greenhouse IPM Workshop. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., on the Oklahoma State University Campus. The morning session will be held in room 201 of the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center. The afternoon sessions will take place in the OSU teaching greenhouses. The workshop will combine both a classroom learning environment, as well as an opportunity for hands-on approaches to implementing IPM, said Mike Schnelle, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service ornamental/floriculture specialist. "The workshop is geared toward greenhouse growers, garden center professionals, interiorscapers, Master Gardeners and advanced hobbyists," Schnelle said. "We will be offering the latest pest control practices that promote environmental stewardship and observe worker protection." Registration is $50 and is due by Nov. 1. Registration after that date or at the door will be $60. Eric Rebek, Extension entomologist, said growers can use IPM as a marketing tool to assure retailers they are being environmentally sound. "It's important for growers to strike a balance between being profitable, while also being good stewards of the environment," Rebek said. Rebek also noted there will be a number of industry specialists, as well as OSU specialists, who will be on hand to share their expertise in this field. Luis Cañas, entomology specialist at Ohio State University, will present "Best Management Practices to Manage Insects in Greenhouses: Can Sustainability Be Achieved?" "We're very excited to have Dr. Cañas with us for the workshop because he brings years of experience in IPM and biological control technologies and has a unique perspective on their application in the greenhouse," Rebek said. Along with Cañas, Schnelle and Rebek, other specialists presenting information at the workshop include Scott Armstrong, BioWorks, Inc.; and Kevin Shelton, Pesticide Safety Education Program at OSU. "This workshop will provide participants with some very important information that they can take back to enhance their businesses," Schnelle said.
