Grant to aid Kansas communitiesKansas An $81,484 U. S. Department of Agriculture Rural Community Development Initiative Grant will support community development training in Kansas, said Dan Kahl, Kansas State University Research and Extension Kansas PRIDE Program coordinator. The funds will be used to train community development coaches, Kahl said. The training will help facilitate assessments and provide technical assistance to help communities grow in their capacity to plan and manage complex projects involving housing, community facilities, businesses and other community economic development. The grant will be managed by K-State Research and Extension's Center for Engagement and Community Development and implemented with the help of the Kansas PRIDE Program. The Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka and the Kansas Department of Commerce also are partners in implementing the grant, said Kahl, who also serves as the liaison between the center and K-State Research and Extension. This project partnership will help leverage both "know-how" and state and federal community development dollars to assist communities in their future planning, Kahl said. The USDA funding will support a "Community Development Academy," intended to expand the capacity for Extension professionals, local economic development professionals, and local leaders in guiding engagement and planning efforts, he said. The USDA´s Rural Community Development Initiative Grant Program requires a dollar-for-dollar match, which helps to build capacity--and accountability, Kahl said.
