Despite rain, farmers still able to harvest

Most counties received light to moderate rainfall during the week ending Oct. 12, but farmers still had 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork to harvest corn and soybeans, each advancing 11 points, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Missouri Field Office, Oct. 14.

Row crop harvest and wheat planting is well behind the normal pace. Some reporters in the northeast district commented that harvest may continue into winter. State-wide, topsoil moisture rates 2 percent very short, 17 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus. Fall tillage is 18 percent complete.

Temperatures ranged from 4 to 9 degrees above average across the State. Rainfall for the week averaged 0.51, ranging from 0.21 inches in the west-central district to 0.94 inches in the southeast district.

Ninety-one percent of the corn crop is mature, 20 days behind last year and normal. Harvest is 41 percent complete, 28 days behind last year and 24 days behind normal. Overall, condition is rated 4 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 39 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.

Ninety-one percent of the soybean crop is turning color, 12 days behind normal. Sixty-nine percent is dropping leaves, and forty-nine percent is mature, over a week behind last year and normal. Harvest is 20 percent complete, over a week behind normal. Soybean condition is rated 5 percent very poor, 15 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 35 percent good, and 10 percent excellent.

Rice harvest is 76 percent complete, almost two weeks behind last year and almost a week behind normal. Cotton harvest is 37 percent complete, 20 days behind last year and 4 days behind normal. Cotton condition is rated 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Sorghum turning color is almost complete at 97 percent, with 73 percent mature, 15 days behind normal. Sorghum harvest is 37 percent complete, 10 days behind last year and 15 days behind normal. Sorghum condition is rated 2 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 43 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Winter wheat is 18 percent planted, 6 days behind last year and almost a week behind normal. Emergence is at 6 percent, 5 days behind normal.

Pasture conditions is rated 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 52 percent good and 10 percent excellent. Rain is needed in the drier areas to improve pasture conditions and fall seedings.
