Heavy wet snow and strong wind was seen during the week ending Oct. 12, but ranges and pastures still lack moisture, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Wyoming Field Office, Oct. 14.

Last week was much cooler with snow in some areas. High temperatures ranged from low 50s to mid 70s. Low temperatures were in the low 10s to 30. Topsoil moisture levels rated adequate or better increased to 77 percent, 13 points above the previous week and 36 points up from the average. Subsoil moisture was rated at 57 percent adequate or better, 33 points above the 5-year average.

During last week an average of 4.4 days were suitable for fieldwork. The weather has slowed bean, sugarbeet and alfalfa harvest in some areas. Winter wheat was winding down in an emerged stage with 98 percent, 1 point above 2007 and 3 points above the average. Dry beans were windrowed at 93 percent with 70 percent combined, 12 points below 2007 and 9 points below the average. Eighty-seven percent of corn was in the dented stage with 53 percent mature and 3 percent harvested, 6 points below the previous year and 17 points below the average. Ninety-five percent of corn has been harvested for silage, unchanged from the previous year and 2 points below the average. Sugarbeets were harvested at 14 percent, 5 points below 2007 and 12 points below the 5-year average. Sixty-one percent of alfalfa has been cut for the third time, 30 points below last year and 20 points below the average.

Cattle gained well for the year. Range and pasture conditions were reported at 42 percent good or better, up 3 points from last week and 16 points above the average. Stock water supplies were reported at 86 percent adequate or better, 38 points above the average.
