Conference brings together Montana's young ag producersMontana More than 175 young agriculturalists convened at the Holiday Inn on Oct. 3 to 5 for the fifth annual Young Ag Leadership Conference. Attendees participated in workshops, listened to panel discussions, and networked with fellow producers and ag industry associates. The volatility of today's markets and perceptions of animal agriculture held precedence during the conference. Mark Gold of Top Third Marketing in Chicago shared his insight into how "young people shouldn't be afraid to play the markets", especially during uncertain times like these. Dr. Wes Jamison from the University of Florida discussed the growing number of people who view animals as family members instead of food sources. "It's important for people, and especially young people, to understand that this change in perception is going to forever affect the industry of agriculture," stated Dr. Jamison. Issues affecting Montana agriculture were discussed at length during the panel discussion where representatives from various ag sectors, legislative offices, and agricultural organizations answered questions from the audience. Most questions were related to brucellosis and what the Montana government is doing to re-gain its class-free status. The main event took place Oct. 4 when humorist Damian Mason performed a satire on American politics. Matt DeMarco of the American Farm Bureau Federation left attendees with the message of getting involved. "If you don't tell your story, then who will and how accurate will it be?" The Young Ag Leadership Conference was held jointly by seven ag organizations--Montana 4-H Foundation, Montana Cattlemen's Association, Montana Farm Bureau Federation, Montana FFA Foundation, Montana Grain Growers Association, MSU-College of Agriculture, and Montana Stockgrowers Association. 10/20/08 Date: 10/15/08 Advertisement
