Colorado Master Farm Homemakers namedColorado Three women were named Colorado Master Farm Homemakers for 2008 at the annual awards luncheon in Longmont, Oct. 8. Dorothy Bates of Kersey; Danice Rockey from Center; and Dorothy Seufer of Holly were recognized for their leadership and community service, dedication to family, and contributions to production agriculture. Dorothy and Dave Bates have farmed in Weld County for 40 years; Dorothy has helped both in the field and in the kitchen cooking for harvest crews. They have one daughter. A mainstay of the Weld County Family and Community Education Club, which nominated her for this award, Dorothy maintains the FCE program records and oversees administration of the Weld County program. She has been a 4-H project leader for more than 25 years and currently serves as Weld County 4-H Foods and Nutrition resource leader. Her bread-making demonstrations emphasize farmers and grain-production as well as bread-making techniques. She is involved with the Friends of the Greeley Museum; serving the past eight years as chairman of Potato Day, the museums primary fund raiser. This task involves supervising 50 volunteers who prepare and serve more than 2,000 potatoes. Dorothy shares her time and talent with her church and as a host for students in the University High School exchange program. Danice Rockey and her husband Warren have grown potatoes, small grains and livestock on their farm, currently managed by their sons, Brendon and Sheldon. Danice remains involved in the farm business which grows and ships specialty potatoes. She is a dedicated member of the Center United Methodist Church, playing piano and singing with the choir in addition to conducting children's time during worship and coordinating mission outreach. She has held leadership positions in both the local Methodist Women and the regional Sunshine District of that organization. She is an active member of the Town and Country Federated Women's Club and serves as treasurer of the local American Legion chapter. A skilled crafter, Danice is noted for the bows and centerpieces she contributes to the annual Christmas bazaar. Her nomination as a Master Farm Homemaker was submitted by the United Methodist Women of Center. Dorothy Seufer is a lifelong resident of Prowers County, leaving only for a brief stint as an ammunitions worker during World War II. Following the war, Dorothy and her husband Jewell became true partners in agriculture on their ranch near Holly. Dorothy drove trucks during harvest, baled hay, hauled stock water and tended the animals, while cooking "for everyone who walks through the door." The Seufers reared two daughters and three sons, whom they endowed with a love of the land and a strong work ethic. Dorothy served as administrative secretary of the Amity Mutual Irrigation Company and was a long-time member of the Holly Saddle Club, involved in many rodeo and race events. Since her husband's death, she has actively assumed management of the ranch and farm operation. St. Francis of Rome Catholic Church of Holly has been a big part of Dorothy's life; her nomination was submitted by the Christian Mothers of St. Francis. To qualify as a Master Farm Homemaker, the recipient must receive at least 51 percent of her family income from agriculture and must be nominated by a viable organization. In addition to the Colorado Master Farm Homemakers Guild, award sponsors include the Colorado Cattlemen's Association, the Colorado Farm Bureau, and the Rocky Mountain Farmers' Union. Further assistance is provided by Colorado CattleWomen, Inc., the Colorado State Grange, and Colorado State University Extension. 10/20/08 Date: 10/15/08
