Ag at the Crossroads Conference Nov. 6 focuses on future trends

The influence of political, social and consumer trends on the future of the United States' food animal industry will be examined at the 2008 Ag at the Crossroads conference Nov. 6 at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln.

The conference, sponsored by the Nebraska AgRelations Council and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Agricultural Economics, will bring together several speakers on topics including livestock and poultry production, the animal rights movement and commercial egg production.

John Lawrence, director of the Iowa Beef Center at Iowa State University, will provide historical perspective on the development of intensive livestock production systems. Ted Schroeder, professor of livestock marketing at Kansas State University, will discuss consumer and market influences on livestock and poultry production.

Other speakers include Marilyn Schnepf, chair of the UNL Department of Nutritional Sciences and Dietetics, on the topic of the growing world demand for protein; Wes Jamison, research fellow at the University of Florida, on how the animal rights movement has influenced food animal issues; and Chad Gregory, senior vice president of United Egg Producers, on strategies used by the egg industry to respond to animal rights organization and changes in commercial egg production.

The conference will begin at 8:30 a.m., at the center located at 4100 N. 84th St. The advance registration of $40 if received by Oct. 31 and $50 thereafter includes a luncheon, breaks and conference materials.
